Abdul Aziz Ali’s Leadership: GNTDA Greater Accra Establishes Credit Union to Support Members

The Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the Ghana National Tailors and Dressmakers Association (GNTDA), Mr. Abdul Aziz Ali, is leading an initiative aimed at addressing one of the major challenges facing fashion professionals: access to finance.

Under the leadership of Mr. Ali, the Greater Accra GNTDA has established a Cooperative Credit Union designed to help members overcome financial difficulties and gain better access to financial support for their businesses.

The initiative forms part of efforts to strengthen the economic position of tailors, dressmakers and other members of the association.

Credit Union to Address Members’ Financial Challenges

Access to affordable finance remains an important issue for many small and medium-sized fashion businesses.

Tailors and dressmakers often need money to purchase sewing machines, fabrics, accessories and other equipment. They may also require working capital to expand their businesses, employ apprentices and take on larger contracts.

The GNTDA Greater Accra’s current organizational information identifies facilitating access to finance through the GNTDA Cooperative Credit Union as one of the ways the regional association supports its members.

The initiative therefore provides a structured avenue through which members can work toward improving their financial position.

Abdul Aziz Ali’s Focus on Financial Empowerment

For Mr. Abdul Aziz Ali, leadership within the fashion industry is not only about training and professional development. It also involves creating practical opportunities that can help members build stronger businesses.

The establishment of the credit union represents an approach focused on financial inclusion and collective economic empowerment.

Rather than leaving individual members to struggle alone with access to finance, the cooperative model provides an opportunity for members to participate in a financial system created around the needs of the association.

Helping Fashion Businesses Grow

A stronger financial foundation can make a significant difference to a fashion professional.

A tailor or dressmaker who has access to appropriate financing may be better positioned to invest in modern equipment, increase production, improve the quality of work, and respond to larger customer orders.

Financial support can also help members move from small-scale operations toward more sustainable businesses.

This is particularly important for fashion professionals who want to expand their businesses but face difficulties raising the capital required for equipment and other business needs.

A Leadership Record Focused on Development

The credit union is one of several initiatives associated with the development agenda of the Greater Accra GNTDA.

Mr. Ali has previously advocated for financial support for members. At the launch of the association’s website and online shopping mall in 2022, he appealed for soft loans and equipment to help indigenous tailors and dressmakers compete more effectively.

The same event also highlighted the association’s efforts to embrace digitalisation by creating an online platform through which members could showcase and market their products beyond their immediate communities.

These initiatives point to a broader focus on helping fashion professionals improve not only their technical skills but also their business, financial, and marketing capacity.

Moving From Financial Difficulty to Opportunity

The cooperative credit union can potentially provide members with a more organized pathway to financial services.

For many fashion entrepreneurs, financial difficulties can affect everything from purchasing materials to maintaining equipment and accepting new orders.

By promoting financial inclusion within the association, the initiative seeks to give members an additional resource as they work to develop their businesses.

The GNTDA Greater Accra has also stated that its wider mission includes promoting entrepreneurship, financial inclusion and partnerships that support local production and productive employment.

Supporting the Next Generation

The benefits of stronger fashion businesses can extend beyond individual members.

Many GNTDA masters train apprentices. When a master has a stronger and more sustainable business, it can create a better environment for apprentices to learn, gain practical experience, and eventually establish their own businesses.

Financial empowerment can therefore contribute to the wider fashion ecosystem—from apprentices and young designers to experienced masters and business owners.

A Model for Stronger Association Leadership

The establishment of the credit union demonstrates how an industry association can look beyond advocacy and explore practical solutions to the everyday challenges of its members.

For the Greater Accra GNTDA, the initiative creates an opportunity to strengthen the financial capacity of its membership while encouraging members to think about savings, responsible borrowing and business growth.

As Ghana’s fashion industry continues to develop, access to finance will remain an important part of helping local fashion businesses become more competitive and sustainable.
